Relaxation Is Not Selfish

Quiet Mind Co

Someone out there needs to hear this today: relaxation is not selfish.

re·lax·a·tion

/rēˌlakˈseiSH(ə)n/

noun

the balancing of your body’s cortisol levels.

Relaxation seems so frivolous when we are immersed in such a fast-paced world based on productivity. We can’t make time for it because we could be doing other things. But is that really true?

The body and the brain cannot function without relaxation. You get stressed, anxious, lose sleep, and flood your insides with cortisol (the stress hormone). Too much cortisol is extremely damaging to the body, and it actually kills brain cells.

Let’s revisit that earlier statement. “We can’t make time for [relaxation] because we could be doing other things”. As discussed, this is incorrect. We cannot be productive when we are consistently in fight-or-flight mode. The body breaks down, and we actually get more unproductive as a result, and exponentially more unproductive as time goes on.

How to Relax

Do you want to be the best you can be? All it takes it a little self-care here and there. Make time for it. Even physically pencil-in time, specifically for relaxation, in your schedule. Truly, it will boost your performance in all areas of life, and you’ll feel great doing it too.

Here are some quick ways to relax:

  • meditate
  • surround yourself in nature
  • unclench your jaw
  • breathe deep into your core
  • drink some herbal tea
  • lie down, scan your body for tension, and work it out
  • massage your shoulders and neck
  • stretch
  • write down how you feel at that exact moment, and any thoughts that pass
  • smell some flowers
  • do something creative and simple

Relaxation is not selfish. It’s a simple thing, really; the hardest part is remembering to do it, and recognizing the value. It will come with time, as long as you make a habit out of relaxation, and the physical and mental benefits will continue to accumulate.

Still Unconvinced?

Many people find relaxation impossible, and they struggle to calm their racing thoughts. Nonetheless, it can be achieved through practice and guidance, but it’s important to recognize that everyone relaxes in different ways. At Brainigo, we prioritize individual needs when considering solutions to stress, anxiety, and sleep issues.

If you want to be more in control of your thoughts and more able to relax, schedule a free 10 minute phone consultation online here.
